NYU Steinhardt – Alumni, Tuition, and More

Steinhardt is situated in Greenwich Village adjacent to Washington Park, close to Tisch School of the Arts, NYU School of Law, and other NYU graduate schools. Greenwich Village offers a stimulating setting in which to live and attend school.

Bleecker Street includes a variety of cafes, live music venues, restaurants, and clubs. Fat Cat Jazz shouldn’t be missed for live music, billiards, and other games.

Shopping is unparalleled in Greenwich Village — from vintage clothing, books, and records to more upscale brands, the neighborhood has something for everyone’s sartorial taste.

NYU Steinhardt moved into the area in 1890 and was the first American university to offer a school of pedagogy. The institution is now NYU’s largest graduate school and currently offers a variety of Bachelor’s-level, Master’s-level, and Ph.D. programs, as well as Advanced Certificates.

Steinhardt consistently earns high accolades from globally-recognized rankings institutions. According to U.S. News, Steinhardt ranks #6 for Best Graduate School, #8 in Occupational Therapy, and among the Top 20 Best Education Schools for Education Policy, Education Psychology, and Counseling.

The Steinhardt graduate student population is over 80% female, with a total enrollment of just over 600 students. Master’s, Ph.D., and Advanced Certificate students typically exceed the number of undergraduate students.

Some of the most respected experts in their fields have graced the Steinhardt faculty roster throughout the years. Among the most accomplished include civil rights author and activist James Weldon Johnson, Tuskegee Airman Roscoe Brown, and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch

Four Steinhardt alumni were recently included in the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 list – nominations typically exceed 15,000, so it is quite a feat for even one alumnus to receive the honor.

Willa Tellekson-Flash (class of 2018) is the Founder and Director of Community at Public, a marketing/advertising firm, and was named to the list due to overseeing the growth of the company’s user base and boosting the company’s valuation to $1.2 billion in the past year.

NYU Steinhardt Tuition

Tuition fees at NYU Steinhardt depend upon the following: intended major or program, college from which the applicant matriculated, term of admission, and # of credit hours taken. Applicants may use the tuition tool to determine their tuition.

For example, a student applying to take nine credit hours per semester in the spring of 2022 would pay $17,478 in tuition and $1,112 in fees.

The school recommends that students make additional considerations and allocations for the following items: $27,420 in on/off-campus boarding, $782 for books and supplies, $1132 for transportation, $3796 for miscellaneous purchases, and $3645 for health insurance.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify.

Graduate students at NYU Steinhardt may be eligible to earn a direct unsubsidized loan of up to $20,500 each academic year, which would cover all tuition costs for that year.

Additionally, the federal direct graduate PLUS loan is a credit-based loan meant to supplement the direct unsubsidized loan – students can qualify for the cost of attendance, minus the total of any other financial aid packages.

How to Get Into NYU Steinhardt?

Steinhardt’s degrees stipulate different admissions requirements: the school offers a variety of programs for undergraduates and graduates in fields like health, education, and applied psychology.

Many dual degree programs at Steinhardt do not exist anywhere else in the nation. One of the most exciting BA/MA programs is in Education Studies and Education, Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy.

This unique dual degree program seeks to help students understand and innovate relationships between educational organizations, schools, and communities throughout the nation and globe. Those who enroll in the program may desire to lead education-focused nonprofit organizations or other advocacy groups.

For example, the Digital Media Design & Learning program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0, professional experience in the field or a related field, and basic technology skills.

Interested applicants should also submit a resume, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, all post-secondary transcripts from previously-attended institutions, exam results for English proficiency, and an optional portfolio. Portfolio samples should include exemplary work that highlights the applicant’s niche talents and creative style.

Several master’s programs and Ph.D. programs do not require a portfolio but encourage applicants to consider their dissertation topic or research interests prior to applying.

Steinhardt seeks to admit students who have an established background in the area they wish to pursue, and they desire incoming research agendas to demonstrate compatibility with the work of current faculty members.
