Therapist, counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist – while many of these terms are used interchangeably, they are not necessarily the same.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, meaning that they have obtained a medical degree from an accredited college or university.

Psychologists may also hold doctorate degrees, but not necessarily. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication, while psychologists cannot.

Both psychiatrists and psychologists may be considered counselors or therapists, and they often work together to implement a treatment plan for people with certain mental health conditions.

Becoming a psychiatrist starts with earning a bachelor’s degree. They are often pre-med students who major in a topic like biology, chemistry, or psychology, but this is not necessarily a requirement.

From there, students complete four years of medical school and a residency program, which can take three to six years.

Psychiatry medical students complete residencies in child, adolescent, and adult psychology. They can also specialize in areas like addiction, mood disorders, eating disorders, and schizoaffective disorders.

The United States is home to some of the best medical schools and psychiatric departments in the world, boasting major research funding from the National Institute of Health, professional organizations for students, connections to top hospitals and treatment centers, and expert professors who are also practicing psychiatrists.

The schools selected here are all within the top 10 of the US News best psychiatry schools list at the time of this writing.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine (New York City, NY)

NYU Langone’s Department of Psychiatry offers pre-clerkship courses for students to understand the phenomenology and taxonomy of significant psychiatric illnesses.

Students may spend seven weeks learning about the central nervous system via small group seminars, video demonstrations, guest lectures, and patient interviews.

There are two residency programs at NYU: the Psychiatry Residency and the Neurology and Psychiatry Double Board Residency.

The former – open to 15 students – is a four-year program training aspiring psychiatrists in a wide range of mental health conditions and exposure to diverse patient groups.

The latter is a six-year program specializing in neuroscience research and neuropsychiatric care.

NYU fellowship programs are available in specialties like addiction psychiatry, wherein students spend a year assessing and treating various substance use disorders with comorbid conditions like eating disorders, depression, and PTSD.

In the ancillary withdrawal services and virtual buprenorphine clinic rotation, students help patients manage withdrawal from opioids, alcohol, and other sedatives.

Duke University School of Medicine (Durham, NC)

Founded in 1943, Duke Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is consistently among the top ten United States universities receiving funding from the National Institute of Health.

Research endeavors study topics like the effectiveness of new clinical trials for psychotherapies, novel biomarkers of psychiatric conditions, and innovative tools for investigating cognitive function.

Duke offers a four-year psychiatry residency program and a five-year internal medicine-psychiatry program.

The latter “Med-Psych” option is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected programs, graduating students who go on to become leaders in creating and implementing novel healthcare systems.

Many gravitate to Duke’s continuing education offerings, such as the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Practical Virtual Course

This three-day training facilitates participants in monitoring EEGs, evaluating patients, responding to side effects, and considering future applications for the modality.

Stanford University School of Medicine (Palo Alto, CA)

Stanford University School of Medicine

Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is known for its multidisciplinary approach to psychiatric research and education.

While similar institutions may be pathology-focused, Stanford is more concerned with a holistic approach to cultivating general well-being and resilience.

A prime example of Stanford’s approach is evident in the PSYC 243 course: Thriving in Collegiate Athletics – Key Concepts in Student-Athlete Health and Wellness.

Future practitioners consider an athlete’s strengths, values, identity, routines, and coping mechanisms to promote healthy behaviors, interactions, and support networks among athletes.

Many Stanford psychiatry students participate in PsycSIG

This student group supports students in choosing a residency specialty, organizing welcome events and other social activities throughout the year, and encouraging students to develop their ideas for psychiatry-related events or initiatives.

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Pittsburgh, PA)

Students interested in becoming psychiatric professors at accredited colleges and universities may be interested in Pitt’s two-year Clinician-Educator Faculty Development Program

Highlights include monthly 90-minute sessions covering topics like academic writing, time management, and exemplary teaching while mentors guide participants in creating an independent research project.

Pitt holds annual events, like the Pittsburgh Schizophrenia Conference

In the most recent iteration, Dr. Fabio Ferrarelli presented on sleep oscillatory abnormalities in psychosis from chronic schizophrenia.

Other unique offerings, like the month-long Boot Camp (Psychiatry Track), support students in reviewing core psychiatric foundations and techniques before transitioning to a residency program.

Four residency programs at Pitt are offered to just over 80 residents and fellows.

The Triple Board Program (TBP) merges initiatives in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at various local hospitals (many of which are among the top hospitals in the United States).

Participants complete two years in pediatrics, 18 months in general psychiatry, and 18 months in child and adolescent psychiatry.

University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA)

Did you know that Penn is considered the birthplace of psychiatry? Perelman was the nation’s first medical school, founded in 1765

Chemistry chair Benjamin Rush became known as the “Father of American Psychiatry” after developing ground-breaking approaches for treating people with various mental conditions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

A top five recipient of NIH funding, Penn’s research pursuits focus mainly on clinical services. One of the school’s current studies – the Balderston Lab – seeks to understand ways to regulate anxiety.

Psychiatry students work with Balderston and other faculty researchers to examine how threats of shock, alternated with periods of safety, reveal mechanisms between anxiety and other executive functioning processes.

Students gain expertise using neuroimaging and noninvasive neuromodulation to record new insights.

Students at Penn take a range of courses in psychiatric topics, including electives like PSY305: Addiction/Alcoholism

In this class, students collaborate with patients at the VAMC, Penn Treatment Research Center, and other locations to support them in methadone maintenance, family therapy, and learning about other narcotic antagonists.

Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, CT)

Yale has an exceptional reputation in psychiatry, having contributed numerous treatments for every psychiatric condition.

Yale psychiatry students will inevitably gain clinical experience at sites like the Yale-New Haven private non-profit hospital, the Connecticut Mental Health Center, and the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center.

Student-researchers may participate in clinical studies like a double-blind placebo-controlled investigation of naltrexone for pathological gambling, currently taking place at Yale.

They hypothesize that naltrexone will have a significant effect in reducing the urge to gamble when compared with a placebo.

Yale’s Mood Disorders Research Program (MDRP), on the other hand, is currently evaluating how targeted regulation therapy can help teens with bipolar disorder, how MRI studies in older adults with bipolar disorder change over time, and how to identify new brain marks of suicidal tendencies in adults with mood disorders.

Students in need of support can join the Psychiatry Residents’ Association

The PRA has supported students for over 50 years in efforts like preparing for Grand Rounds, launching wellness initiatives, and forging community partnerships.

UCSF School of Medicine (San Francisco, CA)

Nearly 10% of UCSF medical students elect to pursue psychiatry as a specialty, representing a higher concentration than the national average.

These students may be enticed by myriad experiential learning and research opportunities, which are abundant at UCSF.

A unique psychiatry initiative offered at UCSF is the Fuerte program, a school-based group program designed to prevent immigrant youth from engaging in detrimental behaviors as coping mechanisms for traumatic stress.

Psychiatry students participate in mental health screenings, conversations with program participants, and preventative strategies to promote general well-being.

Recently, UCSF opened the Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building, a 150,000-square-foot facility dedicated to addressing mental health care stigma via programs for children, teens, and families.

Additionally, research staff and students will collaborate in interdisciplinary projects combining anesthesiology, OB/GYN, psychiatry, and other medical topics.

First daughter Ashley Biden, MSW, recently visited the center for a roundtable conversation on trauma recovery.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD)

Johns Hopkin University is arguably, one of the best medical schools in the world. Constantly contributing to the psychiatric field with innovative treatments and facilities, Johns Hopkins recently opened a new center dedicated to treating schizoaffective disorders.

More than two million Americans live with these mental health conditions, and the center seeks to promote the development of antipsychotic medicines, which have proven partially helpful in 70% of patients.

Nearby, in the Center of Excellence, Johns Hopkins psychiatric students test how genetic markers can help practitioners more efficiently identify people who require intensive treatment in response to bipolar disorder.

Psychiatry students may already be familiar with how psychedelics are being tested for efficacy in treating disorders like PSD.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research is pioneering the exploration of psilocybin as a remedy for adults experiencing symptoms of major depressive disorder.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (New York City, NY)

What’s a day in the life like for a Columbia psychiatry resident? One student might spend the day at the eating disorders unit providing treatment for patients living with bulimia and anorexia. Another might provide outpatient care for Spanish-speaking adults before attending multidisciplinary team rounds.

The Columbia Center for Eating Disorders was founded in 1979 and is one of the world’s best programs dedicated to researching and treating conditions like binge eating disorder.

Patients can receive treatment at no cost in exchange for participating in research studies. This opportunity means they can stay at the facility for an unlimited time.

Advanced psychiatry students may have their own office where they conduct collaborative research, while final-year residents teach classes to junior residents, chair committees, examine psychotherapy cases, and participate in telehealth sessions. Every day is different!

The Emergency Psychiatry Fellowship is a unique opportunity for Columbia students. Within a year, fellows are exposed to various psychiatric emergencies, including suicide, homicide, and substance abuse. They work under the supervision of expert psychiatrists to conduct research and provide treatment to people in crisis.

Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA)

Psychiatry students may publish articles featured in The Harvard Review, the eminent source for ground-breaking research and peer-reviewed studies on psychiatry topics.

The current issue highlights the prevalence of PTSD symptoms following a traumatic spinal cord injury and the primary symptoms of depression in men.

All Harvard psychiatry students participate in a preclinical course entitled “Mind, Brain, and Behavior” (MBB) in addition to a core psychiatry clerkship.

In MBB, students dissect the human brain to understand how people with certain mental health conditions have different features compared to those without a mental disorder.

Harvard offers several residency training options for students with diverse interests, including women’s psychiatry.

The HMS Department of Psychiatry also provides a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry, where fellows spend the first year studying “normal” psychological development before spending the second year engrossed in quantitative aspects of developmental psychiatry and developmental neuroscience.

A pre-medical track is a logical choice for college students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry.

Fitting under the larger umbrella of pre-health tracks, pre-medical students are typically encouraged to major in the subject area of their desire – students need not limit themselves to a science major, though a strong background in the sciences is undoubtedly a prerequisite for admission to medical school.

That being said, pre-med is not a major. It is simply a suggested advising track to prepare a student for entrance to medical school.

Coursework in biology, chemistry, as well as anatomy & physiology is required, while writing, the humanities, and a background in the social sciences are equally valued.

Many colleges in New Jersey offer pre-medical tracks. Typically, a university will have a health professions advisory committee or program focused on recruiting students to the pre-medical track.

These groups provide support through career prep, medical school application, and connections to internships and volunteer opportunities.

In our list of the eight pre-medical schools in New Jersey, all colleges are in different cities. No matter where you live in the Garden State, there are exciting and affordable options for exploring and preparing for a career in the healthcare profession.

Here are some of the very best pre-med schools in New Jersey!

Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ)

Montclair State University just recently launched its undergraduate Pre Medical Program, beginning with the fall 2021 semester.

Students now have increased opportunities to access MCAT exam preparation, medical school application assistance, and career information.

Students pursuing any major can take coursework in the pre-medical track, though most classes will fall into the natural and behavioral science categories.

Throughout the year, Pre Medical Program students get the chance to participate in discussions with medical professionals on various topics, like cancer research, physical therapy using prosthetics, and curbing the pandemic spread.

Scholars frequently embark upon field trips to laboratories, research facilities, and other medical buildings to observe surgeries, interact with patients, and hone professional skills.

Another unique opportunity Montclair State University offers is the eight-year Health Careers Program Combined BS/MD, where pre-med students obtain a baccalaureate degree from Montclair State and a Doctor of Medicine from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School.

Guaranteed matriculation to medical school (pending satisfactory grades, of course) can remove significant pressure from the already challenging task of balancing the responsibilities of a pre-med student.

Princeton University (Princeton, NJ)

Princeton has a top reputation in many fields of study, including economics, business, and political science. The school also offers one of the finest pre-med programs in New Jersey.

Princeton pre-med students are advised according to their type of major, be it STEM-related or more focused on the humanities.

Pre-med students at Princeton have access to three dedicated professional advisers and 20 peer advisers.

The school reports that 85-95% of its pre-med students applying to health professions schools are accepted annually and that many have the opportunity to take a glide/gap year between graduating from Princeton and attending medical school.

These years may be used for research, travel, or community service-focused endeavors.

Princeton health professions advisors strive to keep pre-med students on a successful timeline.

The first year of study is a time for refining soft skills like time management and written communication, while the summer is a great time for pursuing an internship or research collaboration.

Applying to medical school takes about 15 months, and pre-med students really start to get into this process by their sophomore years.

Rowan University (Glassboro, NJ)

Rowan University offers some excellent opportunities for pre-med students. The Office of Pre-Health Programs also supports students preparing to apply for veterinary school, dentistry school, and other special focuses.

A rare feature of a collegiate pre-med program, Rowan allows students to minor in a range of pre-health minors, including pre-medical, neuroscience, and ethics.

Coursework within the minor is highly interdisciplinary. Within the course of a day, a Rowan pre-med student might take classes in health physics, disaster public health preparedness, and cell engineering for regenerative medicine!

Rowan students can alternatively obtain a Pre-Health Studies Postbaccalaureate Certificate, ideal for people with a limited science background who are excited by the prospect of a healthcare profession.

Pre-med students at Rowan should absolutely check out pre-health programming, offered in the form of workshops, virtual cafes, and panels.

The organization provides off-campus opportunities, like in-person and online scribing gigs, and summer programs, like the eight-week Jefferson Abington Pre-Med Program

Students gain invaluable experience in a hospital setting each summer by working alongside practicing physicians, PAs, resident doctors, and other healthcare professionals.

Seton Hall University (South Orange, NJ)

Seton Hall may be a good option for students seeking pre-med programs in schools with Catholic affiliations.

The university just opened its Interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) campus in July of 2018, which serves as headquarters for Seton Hall’s own School of Health and Medical Sciences, as well as its School of Nursing and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

The IHS emphasizes team-based training, bringing together professionals and programs in athletic training, speech-language pathology, and physical therapy, to name a few.

The Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program (PMPDPP) at Seton Hall has been facilitating its graduates’ admission to prestigious medical schools long before the new IHS campus was erected.

This unique program was created to increase access to health professions for New Jersey students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Qualifying students receive financial assistance to pursue a pre-medical/pre-dental track at Seton Hall.

All PMDPP students engage in the M.E.D.I.C.A.L. Summer Academy before commencing their studies at Seton Hall.

In addition to getting to know their peers, they gain exposure to campus resources and come to understand the importance of time management and study skills.

Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ)

Rutgers University

Rutgers boasts a slew of exceptional experiential learning opportunities in the pre-health realm. The Health Professionals Learning Community (HPLC) consists of a small group of first-year students dedicated to pursuing a healthcare career.

As a cohort, they might participate in research projects, attend social events, organize career fairs, visit professional health schools, and explore health careers in other ways.

All HPLC students take the same courses in the first semester: English Composition, Concepts of Biology, General Chemistry Lecture & Lab, Pre-Calculus/Calculus, Honors Freshman Colloquium, and a 1.0 credit Intro to Health Professions class – that’s 17 hours total.

Participants should anticipate a rigorous and exciting collegiate experience within the HPLC.

Rutgers is constantly advertising outstanding research opportunities for pre-med students.

For example, the Gluck Lab at the Center for Molecular and Behavior Neuroscience recently sought a half-time paid research assistant to develop community outreach initiatives and carry out studies of posttraumatic stress in women who have experienced some form of violence.

Opportunities like this are invaluable in teaching empathy, trust, and respect between a practitioner and someone seeking their assistance.

William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ)

Students following William Paterson University’s pre-medical track take required electives like biochemistry and organic chemistry; additionally, the school recommends exploring diverse subjects, such as bioethics, pharmacology, and histology.

Offering an accelerated BS/MS Program in Biology and Biotechnology rarely offered at other campuses, William Paterson has created a shortcut to obtaining dual degrees (a shorter timeline means reduced costs).

What’s the appeal of this type of degree? Graduates are in a solid position to excel in various industries or pursue further graduate coursework.

Pre-medical students are strongly advised to take advantage of off-campus opportunities, like internships with the New Jersey State Aquarium, Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office, or Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica.

Pre-medical students are also eligible for specific scholarships and research funding. Each year, for example, five students are given $1,000 each in the form of the C. Kent Warner Scholarships

These awards are given to high-achieving students majoring in biology or biotechnology.

Colorado is home to some of America’s most beautiful and majestic landscapes, the Rocky Mountains, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes National Parks.

The Centennial State’s ample opportunities for outdoor recreation make Colorado an attractive destination for college students in the 21st century.

Colorado is home to several colleges with top-tier pre-med programs.

On this list of the best pre-med schools in Colorado, you’ll hear of concentrations in veterinary medicine, dentistry, and traditional areas like physical therapy, in addition to less conventional modes – like naturopathic medicine and osteopathy – which may benefit from a more receptive audience in the western part of the nation.

At any of the Colorado pre-med schools on this list, students are not able to major in pre-medical studies.

In fact, they can major in virtually any subject area they desire, though many opt to focus on the sciences.

There are, of course, prerequisites for admission to medical school, which include a high score on the MCAT and a record of diverse clinical experiences.

One of the best parts of attending a Colorado university with a pre-med program is access to early assurance programs (EAPs).

Many schools on this list attract students with partnerships that enable students to secure early admission to medical school, sometimes without providing an MCAT score!

EAPs allow talented students to focus their energies on things like research engagements and volunteer experience instead of completing graduate school applications and studying for the MCAT.

Ahead, we’re sharing the eight best pre-med schools in Colorado. These schools were selected based on the number of graduating students matriculating to medical schools in the United States.

The University of Colorado, Boulder (Boulder, CO)

UC Boulder pre-med students major in both sciences and non-science subjects. The school emphasizes student immersion in patient-facing contexts to develop the soft skills required for a healthcare career.

Pre-health students have access to the Office of Pre-Health Advising, which connects pre-med students with community partners and volunteer opportunities, among healthcare-related workshops and events.

UC Boulder has a unique partnership with Colorado State University: pre-med students who desire to pursue a medical, dentistry, or pharmaceutical program at CSU’s Anschutz Medical Campus are allowed to complete any undergraduate major at Boulder prior to matriculation. Interviews play a critical role in determining acceptance to this program.

Genetic counseling is an exciting subject area within the pre-health pathways.

Designed for pre-med students interested in understanding how human genetics intersect with pathology and treating diseases stemming from mutations, this pathway prepares students for entrance into a relatively new health concentration that continues to grow in popularity.

Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO)

Colorado College Armstrong Hall

Potential pre-med students at Colorado College are advised to schedule a meeting with The Hub, where the school’s pre-health manager or student success specialists are ready to support them in exploring healthcare careers.

Colorado College recommends specific classes for pre-med students, which align with conventional medical school entrance requirements and include a writing-intensive course.

Colorado College offers a ten-day Dynamic Half Block, in which they can immerse themselves in an interdisciplinary subject area or investigation.

This session provides an excellent opportunity for students curious about pursuing a healthcare career to “try out” classes in that subject area.

Non-credit opportunities enable students to dedicate Half Block to MCAT preparation, while for-credit options include “Science and Pseudoscience in Clinical Psychology,” “Introduction to Biomechanics,” and “The Origins of Medicine.”

There are even opportunities to “wade carefully” into the notorious subject area of chemistry, with a half-block course focusing on foundational concepts in organic chemistry.

In this class, students draw and interpret 3D bond-line models of organic molecules, among other hands-on activities.

University of Denver (Denver, CO)

University of Denver pre-med students get connected to a pre-health support network in their first year of study!

There are 600 pre-health students completing coursework at DU, and they are all majoring in 30 different areas. This breadth of academic interest shows that medical schools welcome candidates from all areas of expertise.

While there is no pre-health major at the University of Denver, students can pursue a relatively new health minor dedicated to fostering discussion and solution generation on issues of equity, healthcare policy, and mechanics of the healthcare industry.

One course offering – an elective entitled “Health Education and Promotion” – stipulates a service-learning element within its curriculum through a partnership with Denver North High School.

In this context, pre-med students can facilitate conversations about different health topics with ninth graders.

The school’s advising committee highly recommends joining a student-led club, like DU MIND, which strives to destigmatize mental health conversations in the collegiate community.

DU MIND additionally works to educate college students about a range of illnesses that cannot be discerned by the naked eye (such as depression) and how to support their friends who are navigating these illnesses.

The University of Colorado at Denver (Denver, CO)

University of Colorado at Denver

At UC Denver, pre-med students can specialize in one of 12 areas of healthcare, including naturopathic medicine. This area of medicine utilizes natural remedies like herbs, massage, and acupuncture to enable the body to heal independently.

Several programs at UC Denver distinguish it from other pre-med schools in Colorado. For one, the school operates an eight-year BA/BS-to-MD program, limited to up to ten exceptional pre-med undergraduates who seek to establish careers as primary care physicians.

Their acceptance to this program and continued success through the first few years will earn them placement at one of the best-ranked medical schools in the country, the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The University of Colorado at Denver also strives to recruit international talent to its campus. UC Denver organizes the Kuwait BS/DDS program for pre-med students hoping to specialize in dental medicine.

Through this program, Kuwaiti students can complete their studies at the University of Colorado at Denver and acquire English proficiency via participation in the ESL Academy.

Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO)

Pre-health advising at Colorado State is open to any undergraduate interested in healthcare.

Health professions advisors are available to help potential pre-med students target suitable prerequisite classes depending on their niche in the medical field.

While most pre-med students matriculate to other medical schools in Colorado and the United States, CSU does operate two doctoral degrees in veterinary medicine and occupational therapy.

CSU’s Premedica Club is a significant resource for new pre-med students and regularly hosts guest speakers specializing in medicine.

Joining the club is a great way to connect with job shadowing and community service activities, which are highly valued by most medical school admissions teams.

Pre-med students have significant autonomy in deciding their majors. Of course, there are specific science courses pre-med students must take, but the rest of their academic journeys will differ based on which career they aim to establish.

CSU can prepare students for careers as diverse as anesthesiology assistants, athletic trainers, and perfusionists!

University of Northern Colorado (Greeley, CO)

For the student who feels empowered by a specific, long-range plan, the University of Northern Colorado may be the best choice for pursuing a pre-med education.

Pre-Health Professions Advising at U of NC shares a specific timeline of when to tackle each medical school prerequisite.

Most Northern Colorado pre-med students major in biology or chemistry, though other majors are popular. It is recommended that pre-med students begin completing prerequisites – like biology and chemistry courses – in their first year. Over the summer, UNC students can shadow a physician or obtain a certification like a CNA or EMT.

By the time junior year rolls around at the University of Northern Colorado, pre-med students should be obtaining letters of recommendation, conducting major-related research, and scoring high on the MCAT.

Advising collaborates with pre-med students to prepare and schedule them for competitive interview processes all around the country.

Western Colorado University (Gunnison, CO)

Western Colorado University
Public domain photo via Wikimedia Commons

Here’s an impressive distinction: 89% of Western Colorado healthcare-related majors have been accepted to medical schools within the past ten years!

Pre-med students have the ability to specialize in niche emphases like molecular biology.

A pre-health scholarship of $2,500 per year is available to students pursuing a career in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, or nutrition.

Preference is given to female, underrepresented minority applicants who are first-generation college students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Western Colorado University pre-med students also take advantage of amenities like the Pre-Health Mentorship Program and the Pre-Health Club.

Some engage in research apprenticeships through the Thornton Biology Research Program. Pre-med students can request up to $3,000 in funding for biology-related projects and also get the chance to collaborate with an expert professor.

The Rocky Vista University Early Acceptance Program is run in collaboration with WCU – this program grants provisional acceptance to RVU without requiring an MCAT score!

Up to five elite students from Western Colorado University are selected annually for this EAP, and accepted students are expected to maintain a science GPA of 3.4 or higher at all times.

Adhering to the rigorous standards is certainly worth the reduced stress of not preparing for the MCAT and knowing exactly where you’ll end up in medical school.

Regis University (Denver, CO)

Regis University

Another school advertising a dual-enrollment agreement, Regis partners with St. George’s University in Grenada to transition pre-med students from their undergraduate careers in Colorado to medical or veterinary school pursuits in Grenada.

Due to the program’s competitive nature, students must maintain a GPA of 3.4 or higher and earn exceptional scores on the MCAT to remain enrolled.

One of the program’s many benefits is that students save tuition money by completing the requirements in seven versus eight years.

On campus, pre-med students benefit from small classes. They get to know their professors and often participate in collegiate research with their favorite teachers.

Most pre-med students choose to major in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, neuroscience, or health and exercise science, though the liberal arts are hardly off limits.

Pre-med students at Regis also have access to workshops organized by the school, test preparation for the MCAT, peer mentorships, tours of professional schools, and simulation laboratory exercises.

Did you know that North Carolina is home to some of the best medical schools in the United States?

It would only make sense that a line-up of fantastic pre-med programs in the same state feeds these prestigious institutions.

Pre-med students across the nation can expect a rigorous curriculum during their undergraduate years.

While it’s true that pre-med students should excel in courses like chemistry, biology, and anatomy, pre-med students are generally able and encouraged to major in diverse subject areas.

One of the biggest hurdles in the pre-med journey? The MCAT® (Medical College Admission Test) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess candidates’ readiness for a career in healthcare. Many medical schools base admission decisions partly on applicants’ MCAT® scores.

Other factors influencing admission include letters of recommendation, a record of field experiences and volunteer efforts, and an impressive academic background.

Luckily, the best pre-med schools in North Carolina are bolstered by strong pre-professional advising programs.

Many students in these schools receive a dedicated advisor throughout all four years of college, while others can take advantage of scholarships explicitly reserved for pre-med or pre-health students.

All of the schools on this list supplied 50 or more applicants to medical schools in the recent year, according to the Association of Medical Colleges

Without further ado, we present the best pre-med schools in North Carolina!

The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (Chapel Hill, NC)

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
Mx. Granger, Carolina Hall at UNC, CC0 1.0

UNC is one of the nation’s top producers of pre-med students.

Upwards of 600 students apply annually to UNC’s own medical school, so the institution recognizes the competitive level of the admissions process and aims to prepare its pre-med students accordingly.

UNC undergraduates have long discussed the rigor of required science classes, like organic chemistry, which sometimes seems to fulfill a “weeding out” service.

Many UNC students start their college careers with existing AP or dual enrollment credit – having entry-level biology or chemistry credit enables them to take higher-level classes at an earlier point in their academic journeys.

Many pre-med students at UNC also pursue internships or job shadowing experiences in summer semesters.

On the fence about embarking on a pre-med path? It’s a commitment, and UNC recognizes that.

The school offers health professions exploration courses worth a single credit and graded on a pass/fail basis. AHSC 200 – Introduction to Allied Health Sciences – exposes participants to various health professions, enlightening them to the different ways they might utilize a medical degree.

Duke University (Durham, NC)

Duke University Medical School

Only a few miles from UNC, Duke University offers equally impressive options for pre-med students.

The Office of Health Professions Advising is a significant support network for Duke pre-med undergraduates.

In the first two years at Duke, advisors help students explore opportunities within the health professions world and take relevant courses.

Come junior and senior years, students prepare for the MCAT and medical school admissions cycle while continuing their development in advanced classes.

Pre-health students major in typical subjects like chemistry and biology; that being said, it is totally acceptable to major in history, a foreign language, or international politics as a pre-med student!

Duke also organizes study abroad experiences targeting pre-health students in Costa Rica, China, and Spain, to name a few sites. In these experiences, students work in research laboratories and conduct independent studies. Others may volunteer in community health settings or tutor in schools.

Duke can claim that most of its graduating seniors are accepted to prestigious medical schools annually.

Duke recommends that all pre-health students engage in some job shadowing experience so that they can gain real insight into the daily responsibilities and dynamics of a health career.

North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC)

North Carolina State University

The Health Professions Advising team at NC State University is ready to arm students with interviewing tips, personal statement assistance, health professional school exploration, and academic coursework selection, among other services.

At NCSU, pre-health undergraduates do not follow a set pre-health curriculum; instead, they pursue coursework in an academic major of greatest interest while taking a solid foundation of classes in the natural sciences. Students are also encouraged to take courses focused on improving their technical writing skills.

NC State recognizes that competitive medical school candidates should have significant clinical experience

The school assists pre-med students in securing field experiences in personal healthcare offices, free community health clinics, hospital offices, professional schools, and within major hospital systems like Duke Health, UNC Health, and WakeMed Health.

Still unsure about a pre-med pathway at NCSU? Students can join the Pre-Health Student Club, attend the annual spring health professions fair, or make an appointment to speak with a representative from Health Professions Advising.

Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, NC)

Wake Forest University School of Medicine

Many pre-med students are attracted to Wake Forest’s Early Assurance Program (EAP).

After completing their sophomore year, students can apply for early acceptance to the Wake Forest School of Medicine. If accepted, they are guaranteed entrance to the institution after completing their senior year.

Knowing where the light is at the end of the pre-med tunnel can eliminate the significant stress accompanying the competitive medical school admissions gauntlet.

Of course, there are eligibility requirements: applicants must meet or exceed a 509 on the MCAT and have an overall GPA and science GPA of 3.5.

All Wake Forest pre-med students will declare a major at the end of their second years – advising recommends that students focus on one area where they are the strongest, versus double-majoring in two science-related subjects, for example.

The school admissions committee certainly values quality over quantity of academic performance.

East Carolina University (Greenville, NC)

East Carolina University

Each ECU pre-med student receives a designated advisor who will support them throughout their undergraduate careers – this person is the point of contact for questions regarding pre-med prerequisites, the medical school application process, and field experience opportunities.

While pre-med students can pursue any academic major, the BS in public health is a popular choice, enrolling nearly 900 students each fall semester.

This degree pathway trains pre-med students in hospitals, clinics, communities, and nonprofits. Additionally, majors complete experiential learning opportunities in schools, government offices, and private businesses.

In addition to pre-med, ECU offers pre-professional pathways in areas like dentistry, physical therapy, and veterinary medicine. Various student organizations exist to support pre-med students in their academic journeys and provide outlets for field experiences.

One such group – Health4PINE – is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting health awareness to young adults living in the community. At the same time, ECU Project Sunshine facilitates creative and social learning opportunities for pediatric patients living in a medical setting.

Davidson College (Davidson, NC)

Davidson College
Dacoslett at English Wikipedia, Chambers Building, Davidson College, public domain

Davidson College’s own Brody School of Medicine – open exclusively to North Carolina residents – received over 1,200 applications last year and accepted only 7% from that cohort.

With the understanding of how competitive the admissions process is, Davidson has launched several initiatives to help prepare its undergraduate pre-med students for entrance into top medical schools.

For example, the Summer Program for Future Doctors (SPFD) exposes pre-med participants to a rigorous and thought-provoking curriculum designed to mirror the demands of medical school.

Approximately 30 pre-med students gain the chance to participate in this eight-week program, which includes opportunities to collaborate with faculty in laboratory settings.

The PAC is another way Davidson facilitates pre-med students’ medical school transitions.

Essentially the Pre-medical/Pre-health Advisory Committee (PAC) evaluates each pre-med student based on their academic record, devotion to the medical career, and ethical responses to a series of hypotheticals.

Students seek out these evaluations intending to use constructive feedback to increase their competitiveness in the medical school application cycle.

The University of North Carolina – Wilmington (Wilmington, NC)

Located on the North Carolina coast, UNC Wilmington connects pre-health undergraduates to an array of coaching, programming, and planning resources. Students can concentrate on one of 12 areas, including vision, occupational therapy, and pharmacy.

UNC-W seeks pre-med students as young as high school ninth graders!

The Interdisciplinary Health Education for Aspiring Leaders (iHEAL) experience exposes students living in underrepresented and rural communities to exciting careers and majors related to the healthcare industry, opening their minds to potential career pathways.

Once enrolled, pre-med students can take advantage of unique partnerships formed within the UNC college network.

For instance, UNC-W partnered with UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to innovate an Early Assurance Program for pre-pharmacy students.

This opportunity grants participating students the chance to connect with advisors as early as a semester before joining the doctoral program.

Michigan is home to pristine lakes, a strong line-up of sports teams, and some of the nation’s best pre-med and medical schools!

Offering niche programs in allopathic and osteopathic medicine, the best pre-med schools in Michigan are often the top producers of students gaining entry into the country’s best medical schools.

Most pre-med tracks in Michigan schools grant undergraduates the autonomy to choose any major. Naturally, a solid science background is essential, but most Michigan schools honor the value of other subjects in a pre-med student’s academic journey.

What does it take to be a competitive medical school applicant in Michigan? Undoubtedly, pre-med students will need a high MCAT score, an impressive transcript, and deep investment in a variety of community service, volunteer, and extracurricular endeavors.

Throughout their undergraduate careers, pre-med students in Michigan should develop cordial relationships with professors, who may act as mentors and serve as contacts for letters of recommendation.

How were the best pre-med schools in Michigan chosen? All of the schools on this list supplied 50 or more applicants to medical schools in the recent year, according to the Association of Medical Colleges. Check out the amenities offered by each Michigan pre-med school for yourself!

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI)

University of Michigan Medical Center

The University of Michigan belongs to the group of the top five schools producing medical school applicants in the United States – in 2020, 58% of graduates were accepted to medical schools, compared to 44% of students from a national pool.

UMich graduates’ success in gaining admission to prestigious medical schools makes their pre-health programs worth investigating!

Pre-med undergraduates can expect large and challenging classes in the first two years; additionally, competitive medical school applicants are expected to cultivate an impressive CV rich in volunteering, research, and extracurricular experiences.

The Pre-Medical Club is one of the most popular and engaged health-related student organizations on campus, while students can volunteer in the Mott’s Children’s Hospital, the University of Michigan Hospital, or another setting.

As you know by now, pre-med students don’t need to major in strictly science-focused subjects. In fact, nearly a quarter of recent pre-med students major in computer science, business, and economics.

It is certainly worth mentioning that the University of Michigan School of Medicine is historically friendly to UMich pre-med applicants. For 2020, 28% of their students received an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.

Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI)

Michigan State is known for being a top feeder program to osteopathic medicine schools – osteopathic medicine takes a holistic and preventive approach to viewing and treating healthcare. They differ from “conventional” medical schools in their hands-on therapies, such as massage or chiropractic adjustment.

In addition to osteopathic medicine, pre-health advising at MSU supports students in transitioning to medical, genetic counseling, dental, and physical therapy schools, among other specialties

Michigan State advises pre-med students to participate in co-curricular activities, including community service, leadership-based, or research-centered experiences within a healthcare setting.

Pre-med students are also encouraged to engage in job shadowing in private practices, pharmacies, and rehabilitation facilities.

MSU stands out from similar programs by virtue of its pre-health study abroad opportunities. The Atlantis Project Fellowship places pre-med students in small European hospitals, where they observe doctors conducting their daily responsibilities.

According to the timeline put forth by the pre-health advisory committee, taking part in a summer enrichment program during the first or second year of study at MSU is a wise choice.

Wayne State University (Detroit, MI)

Pre-health students can concentrate in one of 15 healthcare areas, and the advisory team runs informational sessions tailored to pre-med, pre-dental, and other pre-health students throughout the year.

Available in-person or via Zoom, these sessions enlighten students about required coursework, optional extracurricular activities, opportunities for volunteering and exploring healthcare careers, and other information related to the medical school admissions cycle.

Pre-med students can attend regular workshops to refine their various skills. For example, the pre-nursing essay writing workshop facilitates students in preparing short essay responses for the Wayne State University nursing program application.

Other interesting pathways include pre-mortuary science and pre-radiation therapy technology. The former program is available in traditional, online, or hybrid modes and seeks to prepare healthcare professionals in funeral home management.

The latter pathway immerses pre-health students in cancer patient treatment. Students gain experience employing radiation treatment machines and other relevant medical equipment while building compassionate and professional relationships with clients and their families.

Grand Valley State University (Allendale, MI)

Don’t sleep on Grand Valley State – 54% of this institution’s graduates with a 3.4 GPA or above were accepted to U.S. medical schools on the first attempt, compared to a national average of 40%.

Grand Valley also maintains partnerships with five of Michigan’s prestigious medical schools, and students can apply through the Early Assurance Program or WMedStart program.

One of the benefits Grand Valley State affords its pre-med students is accessibility to many student-led clubs and study-abroad opportunities.

Organizations like the PreMed Club and Pre-MD Club link pre-med students with current medical school students and admission spokespeople.

The PreMed Club holds regular meetings on topics like stress management, which they usually accompany with treats and discussion forums.

When it comes to studying abroad, pre-med students can participate in community health-focused internships stationed in Quinto, Ecuador; Salamanca, Spain; and San Jose, Costa Rica.

Ranked #1 in Michigan on College Factual’s list of best schools for medical prep majors, Grand Valley State should be on every aspiring pre-med student’s college list.

Oakland University (Rochester, MI)

Most pre-med students at Oakland University major in biological sciences or chemistry with a pre-medical studies concentration. O

akland undergraduates can specialize in one of four areas, including optometry. Many students pursue a BS in biomedical sciences.

The pre-health concentration blends immersion in the sciences, for certain, but other areas are additionally emphasized.

Students are expected to take classes focused on writing, U.S. diversity, and foreign languages, as skills in these areas can help increase their competitiveness as medical school candidates while simultaneously increasing their ability to reach more patients.

Immersive clubs like Pre-Health Commons challenge students to think critically about performing various surgeries and procedures and allow them to use diagnostic simulation activities in labeling illnesses and injuries. The group regularly features guest speakers from various niches within the healthcare industry.

Oakland University reports promising outlooks for students pursuing pre-health careers, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 15% growth between now and 2029.

Additionally, innovations in telehealth will undoubtedly add positions to the ever-evolving healthcare field. As of May 2020, the median annual wage for healthcare workers was $69,870.

University of Michigan-Dearborn (Dearborn, MI)

UM-Dearborn admission rates to medical schools are in line with national acceptance rates. If you narrow that cohort to students with a 3.5 or higher GPA, UM-Dearborn students are granted acceptance at 66%!

How does the University of Michigan at Dearborn prepare its pre-med students for acceptance to some of the most competitive medical schools?

Starting in their first year, pre-med students can attend new student sessions explaining what it means to be on a health professions track.

They can apply for support through the pre-med mentoring initiative. This experience can give them a close-up look into a medical student’s daily routines, responsibilities, and challenges.

There are other UM-Dearborn-exclusive opportunities for pre-med students to take advantage of, including the annual Health Professions Schools Information Fair, a week-long event designed to expose interested students to the various health professions programs supported by the university and its community partners.

Pre-med students will be encouraged to hear that Dearborn maintains several early assurance programs with Michigan medical schools. These include a Pharmacy Preferred Admission Program with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and an EAP with Michigan State University. Unlike other pre-med institutions, UM-Dearborn offers a pre-health professional studies minor. To complete the minor, students completed 15 credits in topics like medical terminology, medical ethics, and principles of epidemiology.

One of the best-value medical school educations, VP&S was the first in the American colonies to award a medical degree

Today, it is the first medical school in the United States to replace loans with scholarships as financial aid awards. Its faculty and alumni are Nobel Prize laureates and well-known medical figures like Benjamin Spock, Charles Drew, and Burrill Crohn. Less than 2% of applicants are accepted to the prestigious school each year.

Columbia University organizes its MD curriculum into three experiences: 18 months of fundamentals, a major clinical year (MCY), and 14 months of differentiation and integration.

All medical students complete course requirements in these areas, in addition to a scholarly project.

In the MCY, students may complete a clerkship within the field of psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, or urology, for example.

One of the college’s best assets is the VP&S Club, founded in 1894 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate John R. Mott.

Various events for medical students are organized through the VP&S Club, including the annual Leonides Winter Semi-Formal, Super Night (the night before Match Day), and other social activities.

9. Duke University School of Medicine (Durham, NC)

The Duke University School of Medicine offers a world-renowned MD program in addition to the United States’ first physician assistant program, a physical therapy program, and 16 biomedical Ph.D. tracks, among other opportunities.

This year, 522 students were enrolled in the MD program, and 614 were invested in the Biomedical Ph.D. – the most popular concentrations within the latter option being molecular genetics, microbiology, and neurobiology.

The institution claims two Nobel Prize laureates among its faculty and alumni, among other revolutionizing accomplishments

For example, Dr. Barnes Woodhall became the first physician to use chemotherapy against brain tumors in 1937.

In 1998, researchers from Duke were the first to use magnetic resonance spectroscopy to track a specific marker for Alzheimer’s disease, proving that it can be identified.

Unsurprisingly Duke’s School of Medicine is ranked #6 for research, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2023.

Nearly 25,000 patients were enrolled in 2200+ clinical research studies in 2022 alone, and the school received more than $600 million from the National Institutes of Health to conduct research.

Medical students can even take their research endeavors to the school’s partner medical school in Singapore!

8. Oxford University Medical School (Oxford, UK)

Representing the best medical school outside of the North American continent, Oxford University’s Medical School is highly competitive.

From 2019-2021, only a quarter of applicants were interviewed, and 9% were enrolled.

The school’s MD program is divided into the pre-clinical and clinical stages. Students earn their first BM within five terms before pursuing a four-term BA Honours course in medical sciences.

The infamous Oxford tutorials are very much a staple of the pre-clinical components of the medical degree curriculum.

Clinicals take place in years 4-6, and program participants may specialize in a range of medical fields.

Oxford is known for its generous financial aid packages for UK students (international applicants should note that they are not eligible for many of these awards).

While the overseas fee amounts to £52,490 per year, the home fee is only £9,250.

7. University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA)

Did you know that Perelman is the first teaching hospital in the country?

Founded in 1765, the school enrolls over 750 medical students pursuing specialized degrees in internal medicine, ophthalmology, and dermatology, among other fields.

The school’s PSOM IMPaCT curriculum structures its course material around the science, technology, and practice of medicine. The curriculum takes a collaborative approach to exploring complex medical issues, and students have one and a half years of freedom to select from nearly 150 electives.

Perelman also offers a dual-degree MSTP (medical scientist training program) designed for learners interested in pathology and biomedical research.

More than 200 students are enrolled in the program at the University of Pennsylvania, making it one of the most extensive MSTP programs in the nation.

6. University of Washington School of Medicine (Seattle, WA)

Five unique states came together to form the University of Washington School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.

The institution is the only one of its kind in the WWAMI region, which comprises 27% of the nation’s land mass and less than 4% of its population.

The school’s degree structure is remarkable in its accessibility and value: medical students in the Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho states complete their foundations coursework in their home states before completing regional clerkships in community hospitals, international health clinics, and private practices, among other settings.

The Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP) is one of many initiatives where students can gain hands-on experience in their first two years of medical school.

In this initiative, medical students work in community medical settings, while in the TRUST initiative (Targeted Rural Underserved Track Program), medical students have access to conferences, clinical experiences, digital discussion forums, and other experiential opportunities.

5. University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine (Toronto, ON)

You’ll find Canada’s largest MD programs at the University of Toronto.

Made up of nine research-driven hospitals and countless community clinics, Temerty Faculty of Medicine is the only medical school operating within the greater Toronto area of 6 million+ people.

One unique feature of Toronto’s MD program is its organizational structure. Its four academies are made up of clusters located within the hospitals and clinics.

Medical school faculty use a problem-based learning approach to challenge students to take an interdisciplinary approach in addressing fundamental issues in natural settings.

The initial two foundation years of the MD take place in labs and community clinics, for the most part.

In the final two years, medical students embark on clerkships, essentially practicum experiences in 50-week and 25-week blocks. Each clerkship has a designated theme, like geriatric/care of the elderly or medical imaging.

4. Stanford University School of Medicine (Stanford, CA)

Stanford University School of Medicine
LPS.1, Stanford School of Medicine Li Ka Shing Center, CC0 1.0

Some of the most innovative procedures in the medical realm were first performed or created at Stanford University’s School of Medicine.

Such milestones include the first adult human heart transplant in 1968, the first use of monoclonal antibodies in 1981, and the first practice of using gene expression to anticipate cancer outcomes in 2002.

Stanford as an entire institution houses 21 living Nobel Prize laureates, including neuroscientist Thomas Südhof, professor of molecular and cellular physiology at the School of Medicine, who helped discover the machinery regulating vesicle traffic.

Medical students are eligible to apply to the new Berg Scholars Program specializing in laboratory and/or informatics and data science.

Limited to six scholars annually, this initiative will fund two full years of research and two partial years of research.

3. University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (San Francisco, CA)

UCSF Medical School
Masur, UCSF-Mission Bay Campus, CC BY-SA 4.0

UC San Francisco’s School of Medicine has acquired quite a trophy case of awards in the last several years.

They’ve received accolades for being #4 in research and #2 in primary care by the U.S. News & World Report and witnessed two faculty members receive Nobel Prizes.

In 2009, Elizabeth Blackburn won the prize for discovering the enzyme telomerase; only three years later, Shinya Yamanaka was the first to transform regular adult skin cells into stem cells.

We’re additionally impressed by the institution’s several initiatives, including the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative. This program is dedicated to preventing and eradicating homelessness by collaborating with community partners and policymakers.

In addition to UCSF Health, the San Francisco VA, and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Training Center, medical students participate in clinical experiences at 60+ training sites during their MD.

The degree is organized into seven core competencies, emphasizing practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, and interpersonal and communication skills.

2. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD)

If you’re looking for one of the best medical schools in the United States, you have to make time for Johns Hopkins.

The school has pioneered its signature Genes to Society curriculum, a revolutionary way of organizing a medical school experience.

Get this: the sequence and depth are based on our evolving understanding of the human genome.

At Johns Hopkins, medical students don’t analyze “classic cases”; instead, they pay attention to how minute variations in biological and environmental factors can impact human health.

Medical students delve into their scholarly concentrations as early as year one; by the end of year two, they will have penned an academic paper on some independent research they conducted.

Year two clerkships are available in fields like pediatrics, emergency medicine, and women’s health, and they take place in five nine-week blocks.

1. Harvard Medical School (Cambridge, MA)

You’re correct if you’re guessing that admission to Harvard Medical School is competitive.

Out of 8002 applications, the admissions committee granted 851 interviews and enrolled 164 medical students – an enrollment rate of barely over 2%

Most of the incoming medical students (74%) were science majors, and 72% received an average annual scholarship award of $59,502 – the school’s generous financial aid packages make it possible for more students to attend this world-class medical school. HMS graduates also graduate with less college debt than their peers.

Harvard’s MD program comprises two curricular tracks: pathways and health sciences & technology (HST).

Students have earlier clinical experiences and complete a scholarly project within the pathways option.

The HST is one of the world’s oldest interdisciplinary educational programs and engages medical students in heavy biomedical research.

The dean recently applauded the HST’s inclusion of more training in health equity and an increased emphasis on artificial intelligence and clinical informatics.

Students attending medical schools in the United Kingdom gain access to a wealth of innovative technology, ground-breaking research facilities, and highly acclaimed faculty.

Typically beginning with pre-clinical phases, medical students spend the beginning of their studies learning all about the human body and its functions.

From there, they train in hospitals, primary care centers, and specialized facilities to prepare for their careers as well-rounded doctors.

One of the strongest assets of the UK’s best medical programs is its commitment to research. Students collaborate with faculty members to test new treatment methods, identify rare genetic disorders, and combat public health crises.

Competitive application cycles lead to intimate environments where students are challenged to work together to solve applied problems.

Another benefit of attending medical schools in the United Kingdom is their location. Studying in cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London comes with a host of opportunities. Many of these cities offer a thriving social and cultural scene.

We have compiled a list of the ten best medical schools in the UK. These schools are ranked according to where each one places in the US News List of Top Medical Schools in the UK at the time of this writing.

It is wise to consider schools based on the top programs they offer – keep reading to learn more about the phenomenal UK medical schools that have made significant contributions to the global health community.

10. University of Birmingham Medical School (Birmingham, UK)

University of Birmingham Medical School

Birmingham is the largest healthcare region in the United Kingdom – students at the University of Birmingham Medical School gain firsthand experience in addressing major health issues within a diverse community.

After spending years 1 and 2 becoming proficient in human anatomy and physiology, medical students travel among 15 hospitals to take the lead on a range of diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up care.

In the last two years of the degree program, students participate in clinical assignments focused on areas like pediatrics, oncology, and psychiatry.

In addition to experiential work placements, Birmingham students participate in groundbreaking research studies with faculty experts.

The Rheumatology Research Group, for example, has worked to improve outcomes and early treatment methods for 400,000+ UK citizens living with rheumatoid arthritis.

9. University of Manchester School of Medical Sciences (Manchester, UK)

The medical school at the University of Manchester is one of the largest schools in the United Kingdom, enrolling more than 2,200 students annually.

It was also the first medical school to adopt the problem-based learning (PBL) approach to medical education. The PBL technique involves presenting a small group of medical students with a problem and supporting them as they discuss potential approaches.

The University of Manchester is regarded as the most prominent clinical cancer service in the United Kingdom. Within the school’s Division of Cancer Sciences, students play a lead role in conducting early-phase clinical trials for new cancer treatments.

In addition to the Division of Cancer Sciences, the School of Medical Sciences houses five other divisions devoted to diabetes, cardiovascular health, and dentistry, to name a few.

Across all divisions, the school constantly contributes to the medical field through its innovative technology. For example, Manchester installed the world’s first EMI CT scanner and developed a revolutionary hip replacement surgery.

8. University of Glasgow School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing (Glasgow, UK)

In Scotland, the University of Glasgow School of Medicine reigns supreme. In particular, the program is known for its clinical research programs in subjects like community oral health, forensic science, and anesthesia.

Anesthesia is the university hospital’s most comprehensive program, and they maintain close, interdisciplinary partnerships with other departments in the school.

Students interested in community oral health monitor real-life examples of oral health inequalities and play a direct role in implementing more effective interventions – at both the local and global levels.

Forensic pathology is another exciting concentration where students participate in service-based placements.

Founded in 1839, the Forensic Medicine and Science unit is the largest to combine pathology and toxicology.

Students collaborate with pathologists who perform thousands of post-mortem analyses on humans dying from unexpected, sudden causes.

7. University of Edinburgh Medical School (Edinburgh, UK)

More than four centuries old, the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School consistently ranks in the top 50 global rankings.

The 2022 Guardian University Guide recently ranked the medical school #1 in the United Kingdom, while the Times Higher Education ranked the school #3.

Medical students typically take six years to obtain the MBChB degree and begin research-based study as early as their third year.

While most medical degrees in the UK only take five years, Edinburgh’s sixth year grants students an opportunity to conduct more research and therefore publish more academic literature, which often proves advantageous when they start to apply for jobs.

Charles Darwin and James Barry are two of the most notable alumni of the medical school. Darwin attended the university after spending a summer as an apprentice doctor long before he published Origin of the Species.

James Barry – the first doctor to successfully perform a Cesarean section (in 1826) – was posthumously revealed to be a woman. She studied at Edinburgh for two years and graduated at the age of 17.

6. London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (London, UK)

Best known for its research in global health, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s 4,000+ students conduct research in more than 100 countries.

The school is currently ranked #1 in the world for open-access research publications, the percentage of research published by female authors, and the critical impact on the economy/society.

Students gain valuable expertise through participation in innovative research endeavors, such as developing a smartphone with the capacity to diagnose vision problems and using drones to examine how environmental factors affect the spread of infectious diseases like malaria.

The school was recently named the chief operator of the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team. This organization deploys specialist teams to tackle disease outbreaks worldwide (and within a 48-hour window!) Students on this team have, for example, played a role in responding to the Ebola Crisis in West Africa.

5. King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education (London, UK)

Students attending the King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education gain professional experience in three of London’s busiest teaching hospitals and more than 350 local general practices.

Unsurprisingly, the school receives more applications from aspiring medical students than any other medical school in the United Kingdom. It is considered one of the most difficult UK schools to gain admission to, with an acceptance rate of less than 3%.

The school has enrolled several vital figures in the medical community, including Thomas Hodgkin, who discovered Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Alumnus Sir James Black won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988 for developing propranolol (a remedy for high blood pressure) and cimetidine (used to treat acid reflux disease and ulcers).

One of the school’s most important alums – epidemiologist Richard Doll – was responsible for solidifying the connection between smoking tobacco and cancer.

4. University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine (Cambridge, UK)

Cambridge is one of the best and oldest schools in the world. A leader in the medical community, Cambridge students and faculty members were the first to measure blood pressure directly and unlock the mystery of DNA, among other achievements.

The School of Clinical Medicine has been ranked #3 in the world – fewer than 280 new students enroll each year in a six-year course of study, while 40 are accepted to an accelerated graduate program.

Like many UK medical schools, Cambridge is highly regarded for its research contributions. The 2022 Complete University Guide ranked the school in the top 5 for research quality.

After logging many hours with patients in clinical settings and collaborating with expert professors in research studies, Cambridge students are highly likely to gain employment within months of graduating.

3. University College London Medical School (London, UK)

Some of the world’s most important doctors and researchers started at University College London Medical School, including attachment theory developer John Bowlby and Leslie Collier, a virologist who helped design the first heat-stable vaccine for smallpox. Collier’s development was essential in eradicating smallpox.

Currently ranked #7 in the world by the 2022 QS World University Rankings, the Medical School is one of the largest in the United Kingdom, admitting over 300 new students annually.

The Medical School has long been a champion for female medical students. In 1874, the London School of Medicine for Women emerged as the first UK medical school devoted to training female doctors.

The UCL Medical School also has a reputation for its commitment to sustainability. Recently, the school was listed #2 on the 2022 Planetary Health Report Card

This achievement comes from the work of medical students devoted to introducing climate change and planetary health into the medical school curriculum.

2. Imperial College School of Medicine (London, UK)

Imperial boasts one of the largest medical faculties in all of Europe and is ranked #3 in the world by the Times Higher Education.

Medical students select from one of 17 specializations, including Global Health, Remote Medicine, and Neuroscience & Mental Health.

The Remote Medicine track, for example, highlights a 14-week research project where students participate in the evidence-based management of clinical emergencies in remote settings.

The school is also applauded for its intercalated programs, such as the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences track. Here, students learn to identify and treat developmental disorders in infants in utero and human infants.

Five Nobel Laureates got their start at the Imperial College School of Medicine, including Sir Alexander Fleming (discoverer of penicillin).

The school was also home to August Waller, the electrocardiogram (ECG) inventor, and Carl Djerassi, a chemist who created the first oral contraceptive pill.

1. Oxford University Medical School (Oxford, UK)

Oxford University’s Medicine School has maintained the top spot on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings list of the best schools in clinical, pre-clinical, and health sciences for nine years.

The medical school also boasts the highest overall student satisfaction rate within that same time frame.

Medical students benefit profoundly from college tutorials, a vital component of the school’s teaching philosophy. During tutorials, students meet in small groups to discuss readings, research, and cases from the previous week. They receive valuable feedback from diverse faculty members and student peers.

Selective in its admission, Oxford’s Medical School admits 150 new students annually to its 6-year BMBCh course. Alternatively, students can enroll in a 4-year accelerated course – only 30 students are accepted each year.

In years 1-3, students participate in a pre-clinical stage that involves tutorials of 2-4 students, seminars of 10-50 students, and lectures of 200+ students.

In the clinical stage (years 4-6), students receive their teaching in the form of clinical placements within hospitals and primary care settings.

]]>
Pre-med is one of those paths in education that can seem a little bit confusing, especially for students who might be going into different fields of medicine like physical therapy or research.

In reality, a pre-med path can take on many different shapes depending on the path a student wants to take.

At some schools, pre-med is not a major, but rather, a self-directed course a student must take to give themselves the best chance of admission into a graduate medical school.

Pre-med can take the form of advising, clubs, courses, preparatory tracks for medical school admission, and more.

The most crucial thing in a pre-med program is researching what a student’s medical field of interest requires for getting into their professional programs.

Students can do this by looking at the requirements for specific degrees or even by looking at the general requirements released by accrediting agencies like the AFMC

Whatever medical field a student chooses, the list of pre-med programs below are some of the best options for finding the resources and support for getting on the right track to a professional medical degree.

Here are our picks for 10 of the best pre-med schools in Canada.

University of Alberta (Edmonton, AB)

University of Alberta

The University of Alberta lets students know right away that pre-med isn’t a degree but a process of gaining the needed requirements to be prepared for a career in a medical-related field.

As a result, students can pursue a ‘pre-med’ pathway through many different degrees, thus opening the door for students to pick a program that fits their passion.

Students can achieve the requirements for a pre-med path at the University of Alberta, whether they want to pursue being a chemist, a doctor, a paleontologist, or a little bit of everything with an interdisciplinary degree.

Whatever path a student takes, they will have access to a wide range of research institutions that will give them the hands-on experience they need to move forward with a medical career successfully.

Pursuing a pre-med path at the University of Alberta means studying with faculty that have developed technology to help students learn in safer and more advanced ways about the human body’s inner workings.

With a wide range of options available to students, a pre-med path at the University of Alberta is an individual journey that meets students where their interests are.

The Med-P Qualifying Year is for those students who have graduated from the Quebec Collegial system. This year-long program serves as a preparation for the McGill undergrad medical program.

If a student doesn’t get into the Med-P program or doesn’t qualify, they can still find support while pursuing their education requirements through the McGill pre-med society, the Medical Direction

This opportunity gives pre-med-focused students the chance to make connections, participate in a shadowing program, and access a curated guidebook that provides students with the inside scoop on navigating the rigors of preparing for medical school.

York University (Toronto, ON)

Though York University doesn’t have a designated pre-med program, the university’s Faculty of Health school comes with the guarantee that all its degree paths have the prerequisite courses needed to go into most health professions.

York University’s Faculty of Health school approaches education with the application as its number one focus. Using an Experiential Education approach, the university gets students active in their field of interest immediately.

Students are paired with local organizations and can do a range of projects, volunteer service, and paid internships.

For students who feel like they might benefit from some preparatory work to get them ready for their courses, York offers first-year students YU Prep. Even before students start at the university, they will be able to take online courses in math, science, and a specialized course on transitioning to college life.

York University knows that the best pre-med program is one that equips students with real experience and the academic prerequisites that medical programs are looking for.

Students who attend York will find they gain the resources they need to build a successful application as they move into a professional medical degree.

University of Montreal (Montreal, QC)

The University of Montreal’s Faculty of Medicine has been an established part of Quebec for 175 years and is currently an alma mater to a third of the province’s physicians and healthcare professionals. That said, the university knows a thing or two about preparing students for medical professions.

Students who would like to pursue a pre-med path at the University of Montreal can go through the university’s preparatory year program. This path puts students through a sequence of courses that will prepare them for the rigors of medical school, regardless of what medical field they decide to go into.

The University of Montreal’s unique offering is its nutrition department, the only medical department that offers a nutrition degree in Canada. Students who are interested in exploring this critical area of medicine will have unique access to the department’s labs and expert faculty.

The University of Montreal is a French-language university, so students should make sure to brush up on their French-speaking skills before jumping in!

University of Windsor (Windsor, ON)

The University of Windsor has a thriving pre-medical society that students can become part of on their way to pursuing their medical degrees.

Among the services the society offers are online resources, mentorship, and community.

Students who would like to learn more about how to study for the MCAT and the CASPer will find information on the society’s website that explains what the tests cover and how to start preparing for them.

Of particular note is an in-depth breakdown of the MCAT sections; by looking through this resource, students will better understand what they will face on test day.

Mentorship is a huge part of what it takes to have a successful pre-med experience, and students who are part of the University of Windsor’s pre-med society have several great options.

The group offers students access to academic coordinators and mentors already in med-school to help them navigate the pre-med process.

The most important thing about the society is that it provides students with a community of individuals who are going through the same thing they are. At the University of Windsor, pre-med students can be confident that they will find the support they need to succeed.

When one thinks about the essential types of doctors, one might think about brain surgeons or cardiologists. But anyone doing invasive procedures ultimately relies on a very special type of doctor, an anesthesiologist.

Anesthesiologists are physicians who focus on the delivery of anesthetics. They help prepare patients for surgery by determining what type of anesthetics are needed for particular procedures, considering the patient’s health and situation.

Anesthesiologists play just as important a role as anyone else involved in a surgery, as they make sure that the patient stays safe and comfortable during the procedure.

As you might guess from that description, anesthesiologists have a complex job and must be ready to contend with a host of variables.

For that reason, their training is as challenging and thorough as that of any type of doctor.

Like other medical practitioners, anesthesiologists must perfect their skills through educational programs and residencies, working with experienced faculty members and doing hands-on work in clinics.

For that reason, the school where an anesthesiologist studies is of utmost importance. They must be able to work with proven teachers, have access to the latest technologies, and do residencies at respectable teaching hospitals.

That’s a lot to cover, but this list is here to help you out. The ranking for this list is based on the U.S. News & World Report list of top anesthesiology schools at the time of this writing.

This article identifies the qualities that make each school unique, such as the faculty and resources. With this, you’ll be able to find the best program to begin your career in this essential medical role.

Few careers are as challenging, or as rewarding, as healthcare.

To care for the human body or mind, practitioners need a wide range of skills and a thorough knowledge base, things that can only be developed in excellent colleges.

To some, that fact can keep them from pursuing their dreams. Even if they have the passion and the potential, they may not have any good schools in their area. Fortunately, many of the best schools in the nation have online degree programs, including those for healthcare professionals.

Although no online medical school in the United States grants an MD degree, there are many essential health professions and degrees that one can earn remotely.

With a degree in health sciences, public health, health analytics, and similar concentrations, students can move into a wide range of healthcare careers.

Graduates of these programs become hospital administrators, health analysts, and some even go on to earn their MD in a traditional program.

Each school has its own focus and specialization, which means that students will be able to find the right fit for them. The program’s options, concentrations, and goals differ according to each school, meeting the needs of their student bodies.

With that in mind, here are 10 amazing online medical schools in the U.S.
