Few disciplines seek to understand such complex and multilayered systems as does economics.

With concerns ranging from the relatively simple household budget to the ever-changing geopolitical relationships between the nations of the world, economists must develop incredibly complex models and theories to describe and predict the flow of goods, labor, and wealth through the various actors and markets in the world.

Further adding to the complexity and challenges of the discipline, the history of economic thought is rife with competing and conflicting theories that intersect with political ideologies and give rise to globe-spanning controversies and conflicts.

An understanding of these competing schools of thought is necessary in order to trace the forces and choices throughout history that have led to the modern world.

World-famous figures like Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes are just some of the many thinkers behind the multitude of schools of economic thought that seek to describe the interactions and exchanges of individual humans and major societies alike.

Few countries have played such a critical role in both producing economic thinkers and as the site of economic models as has the United Kingdom.

With the founder of the classical school of economic thought, Adam Smith, hailing from Scotland, and Great Britain as an example of the advanced economies Karl Marx predicted would give rise to socialism, it comes as no surprise that many of the best economics schools are found in the UK.

Below are our picks for the ten best economics schools in the United Kingdom. This ranking was made according to where each school places on the Guardian’s List of the Best Economics Schools in the UK in 2022

10. Durham University

On April 22, 1966, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the charter for the establishment of Aston University. However, its history stretches back to 1875 as Birmingham and Midland Institute’s School of Metallurgy.

Focused on science and technology, in more recent years the school became the lead sponsor of the Aston University Engineering Academy’s program to bring engineering education to students from 14 to 19 years old. Following this,

Aston University established its medical school, known as one of the most inclusive schools of its kind in the Uk, it offers 40% of its places to applicants from underprivileged backgrounds.

Aston’s 12 schools and 12 subject areas offer students a range of educational opportunities from the undergraduate to postgraduate levels.

The United Kingdom’s most recent assessment of the quality of research across its institutions of higher education, known as the Research Excellence Framework, determined that 79% of Aston’s research was “world-leading” or “internationally excellent.”

The same report found that 74% of its research was “very considerable” or “outstanding” in its significance and reach.

Aston takes this acclaimed research output and works to effect positive outcomes in the world through the Knowledge Exchange Framework. The program is focused on working with enterprises to grow the economy and enhance productivity and society while keeping the best interests of its student body in mind.

Aston University is an excellent choice for students seeking a forward-thinking science and technology university.

University College Birmingham

University College Birmingham has recently invested £140 million into new campuses in which students pursue degrees accredited by the University of Warwick. The university’s roots go back to the 19th century, when its forbearer was known as Birmingham Municipal Technical School.

From then until now, the school was noted for its culinary arts courses or what was referred to as “cookery.”

The school became part of the United Kingdom’s higher educational system in 2002, although many of its courses have a vocational emphasis to this day.

Alumni from the school have gone on to found businesses centered on developing zero calorie syrups and sauces and to receive industry awards

With students from 65 countries seeking further education, apprenticeships, or a higher educational degree, anyone who chooses to enroll at University College Birmingham is bound to encounter a wide range of opportunities and forge diverse connections.

Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University currently sees some 25,800 students from 80 countries taking courses from one of its four faculties.

These faculties offer health and education, engineering, business, and art courses.

The university’s current formation arose from the merger of five different colleges brought together as The City of Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971 before becoming Birmingham City University in 2007.

The university’s STEAMhouse center brings together experts from multiple disciplines to support the growth of business and promote innovation.

As part of its mission to support economic growth, Birmingham City University has contributed £270 million to Birmingham’s regional economy.

As part of its 2025 strategy, BCU has invested more than £400 million into an urban renewal project centered in Birmingham’s Eastside.

The school is developing multiple buildings and revitalizing historic structures as it supports the city that supports it.

Research projects at BCU have recently tackled healthcare provided via telemedicine and supply chain issues.

Birmingham City University’s focus on solving global challenges while contributing to its region’s economic power ensures that its students’ research and skills are put to meaningful use.

Newman University

Founded in 1968, Newman University offers students small class sizes as they study in buildings well-connected to significant thoroughfares and surrounded with beautiful scenery.

Roughly 2,700 students find devoted academic support at its highly-awarded sustainable campus

While it was originally founded as a small Catholic college focused on educating future teachers, the school gained its university status in 2013.

Among other notable events in its more than 50-year history, the school’s patron saint, John Henry Newman, was beatified in 2010 during Pope Benedict XVI’s stop in Birmingham during his state visit to the United Kingdom.

Newman University’s research was recently ranked under the UK’s Research Excellence Framework as “internationally significant” and of “world-leading” quality.

Newman’s postgraduate research centers are focused, in part, on the humanities, education, and biblical studies.

The university supports its researchers as an organizational member of Vitae, which seeks to provide professional development opportunities to researchers.

Students interested in adding a religious component to their courses in higher education find a fulfilling home as they study on Newman University’s quiet and sustainable campus.

Birmingham Metropolitan College

Rather than being primarily focused on producing research and offering undergraduate and graduate degrees, Birmingham Metropolitan College is one of the United Kingdom’s further education centers

Further education in the UK serves some students as a bridge between secondary and higher education, while, for others, it provides vocational or career training.

Created in 2009 by the merger of Matthew Boulton and Sutton Coldfield Colleges, BMet offers students approximately 200 courses to continue their education.

Whether taking A-levels, vocational courses, or working toward higher education, students at one of BMet’s 10 locations in Birmingham find great support from the school.

Birmingham Metropolitan College offers applicants small class sizes, low tuition costs, and accessible admission requirements.

Students with interest in horticulture will find BMet’s partnership with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens enticing as the gardens are world-famous and contain 7,000 plants.

The UK’s Royal Horticulture Society approves the school’s part-time and full-time courses.

From continuing education to pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, students choosing to enroll at Birmingham Metropolitan College take advantage of its low cost of attendance and small class sizes to prepare themselves for the next phase of their journeys.

South & City College Birmingham

Another instance of the UK’s further education system, South and City College Birmingham’s eight campuses offer accessible vocational training across Birmingham.

The school offers students full-time, part-time, and apprenticeship classes to suit their educational needs.

The school’s current formation is the result of a series of mergers of previously existing colleges mergers.

Beginning with the merger of South Birmingham College and City College Birmingham, the final merger occurred in 2017 with the incorporation of Bournville College.

Level 1 to higher education courses are provided to students, enabling them to pursue a career in construction or build one in higher education.

The school offers its range of courses and virtual campus tours to international students, who make up part of the 20,000 students attending the school annually.

South and City College Birmingham was recently awarded the title of Further Education College of the Year at the Education Awards.

This event recognized the school’s efforts to promote excellence and achievement as it transforms the lives of its students.

Manchester, England, is the center of the largest bustling metropolis in northwestern England.

It is rich in history—claiming to have been the first of a “new generation” of industrial cities in the 1800s—and has much to offer in terms of culture, architecture, scientific and engineering advancement, and more.

The city itself went through a cultural revival at the front end of the 21st century, now boasting institutions such as the Lowry, the John Ryland University Library, and the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Manchester also has a vivacious pop music scene, and there is no end to the artists performing at venues such as the AO Arena and the O2 Apollo.

Although Manchester is a busy urban area, it also has beautiful parks for those who need a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Fletcher Moss Park & Botanical Gardens and Heaton Park—which covers over 600 acres—are two notable outdoor attractions within the city.

Along with much to do when visiting, the city is home to some of the highest-ranked colleges in university in all of England.

Those desiring to make Manchester their home away from home while pursuing higher education would do well to attend any of these five prestigious colleges.

University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is a result of the merging of two universities that worked closely together for years— the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester—in 2004.

For many years they have been at the forefront of innovation. They have amassed world-changing accomplishments, such as being the first to discover the nuclear nature of the atom and starting the country’s first nursing degree.

Times Higher Education ranked this prestigious university as the 50th in the world and 8th in the United Kingdom in 2022.

The University of Manchester is the third largest college in the UK, with students from over 160 countries worldwide.

Some of their highest-ranking areas of study include Endocrinology and Metabolism, Economics and Business, and Physics.

Nobel Prizes have been awarded to many alumni of the University of Manchester, including Sir Arthur Lewis, who pioneered much research in economic development, and Neville Francis Mott, who investigated and added much knowledge to what we know about magnets.

Regardless of the rigorous academics of this university, there is much to do on campus and in the surrounding city.

Its gorgeous campus is full of a mix of Victorian and modern buildings, gardens, and cafes to catch up with friends.

The list of extracurriculars is extensive and has many opportunities for students to partake in volunteering, play sports, and get involved in the arts.

Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is a well-respected public research university.

Although its overall international ranking has dropped in recent years, it is still the ninth most popular university in the UK in drawing applicants.

The campus boasts of being a center for groundbreaking discoveries, embracing creativity, and blazing new trails for the sciences. MMU has no shortage of these exemplary accomplishments.

One such example from 2019 includes MMU’s ranking as one of the UK’s “greenest” Universities by People and Plant.

This university is clearly dedicated to taking care of the planet, and many of its efforts were highlighted— including its success in recycling over half of the university’s waste between 2017-2018, and its commitment to netting zero carbon emissions by 2038, thanks to its pioneering organization Zero Carbon Manchester Framework.

In terms of social life outside academics, the surrounding city is excitingly modern and the campus offers many extracurriculars and events.

Students can join societies such as the Cheese and Wine Society, Debating Society, or the Girls Who Code.

University of Salford

The current University of Salford is a merger of two colleges that is now spread across three campuses.

It is currently ranked at #72 Best Global Universities in the UK by U.S. News and has an enrollment of over 17,000.

According to the National Student Survey, 83% of all Salford graduates were satisfied overall with their education.

Like other competing schools in the surrounding area, the University of Salford has a wide variety of undergraduate programs to choose from—482 to be exact—and has something for every student.

Some of their most popular, highly ranked programs include Civil Engineering, Music, and Communication and Media Studies.

Salford takes the quality of its education seriously, and according to the REF 2021, 78% of the research conducted at the university was rated top-notch, even internationally.

The main campus in Peel Park is a short walk from the Manchester city center and is situated along the River Irwell.

One of the other two campuses, MediaCityUK, is based in the MediaCity building which houses BBC, ITV, and over 250 other media companies and studios.

This close proximity encourages collaboration between students and professionals in the industry—which is a big draw for potential students aiming to land in the media industry. The campuses combined cover over 60 acres.

University of Bolton

Students looking for a bit of a smaller university in the Greater Manchester Area would do well to look into the University of Bolton.

The on-campus student body sits at around 6,000, and the school prides itself in keeping the student-to-professor ratio reasonably low.

This university was ranked 46th best university in the UK by the Guardian, and as fourth in the UK for teaching quality by the Times & Sunday Times.

These rankings are based on nine different indicators and not just on quantitative surveys alone.

Bolton is known for having an industry-relevant curriculum and providing career-focused degree programs to help students succeed after university.

The university’s most popular and high-ranking programs include Accounting & Finance, Criminology, and Creative Writing.

The school takes pride in its facilities and has made some impressive investments over the years.

One such building would be the National Centre for Motorsports Engineering—which, according to the school’s website, is the only one of its kind in the UK—that houses the school’s motorsport engineering program.

Like most of the colleges in urban settings, Bolton has many on-campus social events and clubs that encourage students to get out and explore the surrounding area.

They also have an on-campus Job Shop that helps students find part-time jobs to work while pursuing their education.

Royal Northern College of Music

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has been the UK’s top music college for research since 2014. It was founded in the 1970’s after the merging of the Royal Manchester College of Music and the Northern School of Music.

The school has under 1,000 students that it shapes into future-equipped and extraordinarily-versatile musicians. It has both a theater and concert hall and affords its students the consistent opportunity to perform for the public—and to work alongside professional musicians.

While there are three routes of undergraduate study—Bachelor of Music with Honors, Bachelor of Music with Honors in Popular Music, Graduate Diploma of the RNCM—there are different schools of study, such as the School of Composition or the School of Conducting.

The school has no on-campus accommodations but there is a hall for students right next to campus. The school grounds are only a short walk from the city center, and like the other surrounding institutions, offer much to do within the city.

Some of the school’s notable alumni include Stjepan Hauser, a Croatian cellist who is a member of 2CELLOS, and Ali McGregor, an Australian opera singer.

Birkbeck’s flexible learning options are significant in drawing students to the university.

Most students are only required to be on campus for one or two nights out of the week! Undergraduates attend in-person classes supplemented by asynchronous online interactions.

The school places a heavy emphasis on research and collaborative learning; in fact, Birkbeck won the Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the UK’s university rating system.

Birkbeck differs from other universities, where faculty experts typically attend to graduate students. Instead, Birkbeck assigns their best experts to teach undergraduate students.

The faculty investment – in addition to a wealth of learning resources – undoubtedly plays a part in the promising career prospects for Birkbeck alumni.

95% of Birkbeck’s graduates are hired or pursuing graduate work within six months of commencement.

9. City, University of London
